I support requiring a Special Use Permit (SUP) for data centers in Lewisville. The residents I've spoken with in our community would like to prevent any new data centers, so SUPs is only a small step in that direction. I'd like to see independent, third party studies and impact reports for every data center proposal the council considers, as well as tightening any loopholes identified down the line. The current lack of regulation feels irresponsible and dangerous.
At our current rate of technological advancement, it’d be irresponsible to allow data centers to remain undefined/unregulated. Why subject citizens to rolling blackouts or watering restrictions, while turning a blind eye to the waste these centers can perpetuate as they siphon unseemly amounts of our resources? They have the means to negatively impact our environmental health, economic stability, and general quality of life. We MUST set standards to prioritize the preservation of our wellbeing.
I support the use of Special Use Permits. The definition of "data center" must be crafted to cover areas of infrastructure/resources impact, i.e; electric transmission grid; water resource/systems; environmental impact; and community impact, i.e.,location, noise/light pollution. Cost of development/operation must not be passed onto citizens, like, increases to electric/water bills. I encourage leaders research and consider the pros and cons of data centers already in operation in North Texas.
I agree with the other supporters. We do not need a data center here or anywhere in Texas. We have enough issues with the power grid and drought conditions. I shouldn't be told to only run one appliance while a company can use all the power they want.
I support any measures to regulate and prohibit future data center development in Lewisville. In addition to dealing with heat and drought conditions, residents like me who live near industrial and warehouse areas of the city already contend with noise pollution from the highways, noise from drones making package deliveries, and no green spaces within a short walking distance from home. I urge the city to preserve residents’ quality of life by protecting the environment from future data centers.
Considering our frequent drought conditions and water limits placed on residents, large corporations should not be able siphon valuable resources that affect real people. Data centers provide minimal jobs and benefit to the community at large resource costs. Commercial zones should be used in a way that maximally benefits the community and data centers do not.
